Apollonius of Tyana

11:00 - 11:20am on Saturday, May 14 2011 in Main Stage at Derby Square

[This event will move to The Gathering (217 Essex St.) and will start 10 minutes late if rain plan is implemented.]

Worcester's Thin Middle Band brings to the main stage
a dance and music performance that is a historical revival of Charles Olson's dance play, which was first put on by Merce Cunningham and John Cage at Black Mountain in 1953.

Charles Olson, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1910, later became
Rector at Black Mountain College, where in the early 1950s he wrote a play
for words and dance called Apollonius of Tyana. The play documents the
classical education and rebellion against the Tyranny of Rome by Apollonius
(Appollus). The play was first put on with Merce Cunningham and John Cage
at Black Mountain. This revival was first performed in Worcester in March
2010, and has travelled through Rochester, Gloucester, and Mt. Saint James.
